Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers in the world. As a teacher, you will help shape the next generation of people. You’ll watch students progress and reach their goals. You’ll inspire and guide people down paths that will lead to a brighter future. Teaching may seem like just a regular job, but it’s so much more.

To be a teacher is to love working and being around children. The time during the day seems to fly by, which can be both a good thing and a hard thing: teachers may feel that there is not enough time to get their tasks done each day, and there are often a lot of demands placed upon them; however, despite the hard work, the social and academic growth a teacher witnesses within their students is truly wonderful. Students are good-hearted and they make teachers smile every day; often, when it’s time to say goodbye to a group of students at the end of the school year, many teachers wish they had just a little more time to spend with them.

Teachers need to have a calming and positive influence on their classroom. Students need to know that their teacher is there for them and that their teacher is a valuable resource that they can turn to for the help they need to be successful in school. Having a positive impact on students and helping them through the daily frustrations that life and learning can bring are some of the many great things that come from being a teacher.

Teachers should always uphold their commitments and should stay true to who they are. Students will surprise you with their incredible insight; they are tenacious and watchful, and they often hold teachers up as an example in their lives. This should encourage teachers to show interest in their students’ lives and in what they’re passionate about by taking the time to listen to them—even if it might conflict with to-do lists.

Along with being a good example of hard work and kindness, teachers must also be an example of humility. Teachers should not be afraid to admit when they don’t know something and should show students how to research and find solutions to problems. Teaching not only shapes the teacher into a better person, but the teacher, in turn, can shape his or her students to be better people, which often leads to a brighter future.

The job of a teacher is imperative to the development of the future economy and workforce. Young students depend on sources of guidance and inspiration, which teachers can provide. Teachers should challenge themselves to create safe environments and provide engaging learning opportunities for students.

While the education that teachers offer students is critical, there is something else that is just as—if not more—important: the kind and caring social skills that teachers can exemplify in both hard and mundane situations. School is not just a place to learn algebra or chemistry, it is a place where students are able to develop healthy social skills and mature to be better people. In school, students can also learn more about what they want to do with their lives. You can be the reason behind helping a student find their passion and excitement in learning!  

Teachers will have the opportunity to grow and be educated right alongside their students. Workshops and day-to-day tasks can help improve teaching skills. Every day is exciting. As a teacher, you are going to experience difficult days, but those days can lead to learning and growth; every challenge offers countless rewards that can change your life for the better. The more you learn and grow from these experiences, the more you can help your students.
